Millipore fourth-quarter profit rises to 81 cents a share

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — Millipore Corp. said late Thursday its fourth-quarter net income nearly tripled to $45.1 million, or 81 cents a share, from $18.5 million, or 34 cents a share, a year earlier. Results from the most recent period include $4.4 million, or 6 cents a share, in pretax stock-based compensation expenses. Excluding manufacturing consolidation and acquisition and restructuring costs, among other items, earnings were $54.1 million, or 98 cents a share. The Billerica, Mass., bioprocess and biosciences products and services company’s sales rose 5.8% to $405.2 million $383.1 million in the year-ago period. On average, analysts polled by Thomson Financial expected per-share earnings, excluding items, of 98 cents on revenue of $410 million. Looking ahead, the company expects continued sales weakness from certain large North American biotech customers, negatively affecting U.S. sales.
