Dollar declines after downbeat payroll data

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — The dollar declined against most other major currencies, after the Labor Department reported that U.S. employers cut back their hiring in January for the first time in more than four years, perhaps providing the smoking gun showing that the economy has entered a recession. The dollar index, which tracks the performance of the greenback against a basket of other currencies, dropped 0.3% to 74.985.
