Tokyo Electron, Sharp to set up solar cell joint venture
HONG KONG (MarketWatch) — Tokyo Electron Ltd. said Monday it has established a joint venture with Sharp Corp. to develop manufacturing equipment for the production of solar cells. The venture, capitalized at 50 million yen ($460,000), will focus on commercializing plasma chemical vapor deposition (CVD) systems to manufacture thin-silicon solar batteries, Tokyo Electron said in a statement Monday. Tokyo Electron will take a 51% stake in the venture while Sharp will take a 49%. The first shipments of the manufacturing equipment are planned for 2009. Tokyo Electron shares ended 0.7% higher in Monday trading in Tokyo. Shares of Sharp fell 1.4%.
