Sony to partner with Sharp in LCD panel production
HONG KONG (MarketWatch) — Sony Corp. will enter into a joint venture with Sharp Corp. , investing up to 100 billion yen ($926.1 million) for a stake in a LCD panel factory currently under construction in Osaka Prefecture, according to a Japanese media report Tuesday. Sharp has welcomed Sony’s participation in the 380 billion yen project, being built in the southern city of Sakai, believing the partnership will lower overhead costs and lead to other savings, the Nikkei business daily reported. Sony is looking to the joint venture to procure LCD panels of 50-inches or larger, a segment that is undergoing booming sales on strong consumer demand for large-screen TVs.
