United Microelectronics to make iPhone chips; report

HONG KONG (MarketWatch) — Taiwan-listed chipmaker United Microelectronics Corp. has been named as a supplier of chips for the next generation of Apple Inc.’s iPhone, ending the role of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing as sole supplier, according to wire reports citing the Chinese-language newspaper Economic Daily News. Siliconware Precision Industries Co. will provide packaging and testing of the UMC chips contracted for use in the iPhone, the report added.
