China’s Chongqing Changan to open car design studio in Japan

HONG KONG (MarketWatch) — Chinese automaker Chongqing Changan Automobile Co. will open a design studio in Japan, with plans to eventually employ a team of about 60 engineers and designers from Japan and China, according to a media report. The Yokohama-based studio is expected to open in May with an initial staff of about 10 engineers and focus on both interior and exterior design, the Nikkei newspaper reported in its Wednesday morning edition. The Changan studio, believed to be the first of its kind in Japan by a mainland carmaker, will also seek out close ties with Japanese auto parts producers and undertake joint development projects. The knowledge is expected to be channeled toward the development of small cars and hybrids in China, where Changan ranks as the fourth-largest automaker.
