Treasury’s Ryan: Close contact with Fed over liquidity

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — The Treasury Department said it is discussing with the Federal Reserve what options might be available if the central bank strains its balance sheet in its efforts to provide liquidity to the financial markets, said Anthony Ryan, the Treasury assistant secretary for financial markets. “We are in close contact…and will continue to work with them” to review all scenarios, Ryan told reporters at a briefing Wednesday in connection with the quarterly refunding auction of notes and bonds. The Wall Street Journal, quoting Fed officials, reported earlier this month that if the Fed runs out of room on its balance sheet, one option under consideration would be to have Treasury step in and issue more bonds in the market, deposit the cash at the Fed and allow the central bank to recycle the case into loans or open market purchases.
