European markets step higher after payrolls data

LONDON (MarketWatch) — European markets extended their gains in afternoon trading Friday after a better-than-expected nonfarm payrolls report. The U.K. FTSE 100 index rose 1.5% at 6,18.10, the French CAC 40 gained 1.7% at 5,081.11 and the German DAX 30 added 1.6% at 7,060.87 after the latest figures showed the U.S. economy lost 20,000 nonfarm payroll jobs in April. Economists polled by MarketWatch had been forecasting a decline of 78,000.
