South Korea to boost avian flu drug stockpile
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — The South Korean government plans to boost its stockpile of drugs to fight avian flu, securing enough to treat 2.5 million people, the Office of the President said Saturday. The statement didn’t specify which drugs it would buy, although the Korea Center for Disease and Control named oseltamivir as a key preventative treatment. Oseltamivir is also known by its brand name Tamiflu and is manufactured by Swiss pharmaceutical giant Roche Holding . The move is a part of a comprehensive government effort to contain the spread of bird flu and prevent human infection.
