British jobless claimants up 7,200 in April

LONDON (MarketWatch) — The number of persons claiming jobless benefits in Great Britain rose by 7,200, to 806,300, in April, the Office for National Statistics reported Wednesday. Markets were expecting a flat reading. The number of claimants was down 82,300 from the same month last year. Claimants totaled 2.5% of the workforce, unchanged from March and in line with market expectations. Average earnings in the three months ending in March were slightly stronger than expected, rising 3.8%, the ONS said, matching the pace seen in the three months to February and slightly above forecasts for a 3.7% rise.
