CBI survey shows unexpected June rise in U.K. factory orders

LONDON (MarketWatch) — The Confederation of British Industry’s June industrial trends survey showed an unexpected improvement in total manufacturing orders, with 31% of firms describing order books as “above normal” and 30% describing them as “below normal” for a balance of +1. Consensus expectations were for a decline in the balance to -12.5 from -10 in May. Manufacturers expect to see steep price increases continue, with 39% of firms saying the expect to raise prices over the next three months, while 10% say they expect to lower them, for a rounded balance of +28, just off the 13-year high of +30 seen in May.
