U.S. charges over 400 defendants in mortgage-fraud schemes

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — The Justice Department and the FBI charged more than 400 defendants on Thursday for their roles in mortgage-fraud schemes carried out nationwide since March. The law enforcement agencies said the schemes resulted in about $1 billion in losses. The announcement comes at the same time the Justice Department indicted two former Bear Stearns hedge fund managers on mortgage-related charges.
