Nielsen: Google gains search share as Microsoft, Yahoo drop
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — Google Inc. increased its share of the U.S. online search market by 16% from the year-earlier period to 60.2% in July, as rivals Yahoo Inc. and Microsoft Corp. each saw their respective shares decrease, according to data released Tuesday by Nielsen Online. Google’s gain came as Yahoo saw its search share drop 11% from a year earlier to 17.4%, and Microsoft saw its share drop 10% to 11.9%. Microsoft launched a failed effort to acquire Yahoo earlier this year, in order to gain ground on Google in the lucrative online search advertising market.
