United faces $18,000 fine for poor maintenance practices
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — United Airlines faces an $18,000 fine from the Federal Aviation Administration for poor maintenance practices related to an Airbus A320 jet that skidded off a Jackson Hole, Wyo., runway in February, the Associated Press reported late Thursday. The fine cited two maintenance violations: that United flew the plane for three weeks prior to the accident even though it “was not airworthy,” and that the Chicago-based carrier failed to identify crossed wiring in the plane’s wheel well that is believed to have caused its wheels to lock, the AP said. Following the accident, United found two more A320 planes with the crossed wiring and corrected them. The Jackson Hole flight slid off the runway after landing on Feb. 25. There were no serious injuries. United is a unit of UAL Corp. . Aibus is a unit of European Aeronautic Defence & Space Co. .
