U.S. stocks open firmly higher with hopes on Bernanke speech

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — U.S. stocks rose at the open on Friday, with investors hopeful for a fix to the problems at mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac turning to Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, who is due to give a speech in Jackson Hole, Wyo. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 64 points, or 0.6%, to 11,501, with 27 of its 30 components opening higher. The S&P 500 index gained 6.9 points, or 0.5%, to 1,284, while the Nasdaq Composite rose 15 points to 2,395.
