NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — U.S. stocks on Tuesday erased losses and tilted higher amid reports the federal government might intervene to prevent a possible collapse of American International Group Inc. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 42.42 points to 10,959.93. The S&P 500 climbed 3.36 points to 1,196.06, while the Nasdaq Composite gained 5.21 points to 2,185.12.
