BNP executive to lead Dexia, ex-Belgian PM to be chairman
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — The Belgian and French governments have agreed to propose BNP Paribas executive Pierre Mariani to serve as chief executive of troubled Dexia SA , and former Belgian Prime Minister Jean-Luc Dehaene as the new chairman, according to reports Tuesday. Belgium Prime Minister Yves Leterme announced the move after convening an emergency Cabinet meeting early in the morning. Mariani, 52, is co-head of retail banking and chief of international retail services at BNP, Reuters reported. On Monday, Leterme held talks in Paris with French President Nicolas Sarkozy on the fate of the French-Belgian bank, Agence-France Presse reported. The departure of bank chairman Pierre Richard and chief executive officer Axel Miller were among the conditions of an earlier 6.4 billion euro ($8.7 billion) bailout package for Dexia, hastily put together by the French, Belgian and Luxembourg governments, according to AFP.
