Las Vegas air traffic gets slashed after record oil prices

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — Record high oil prices in July helped to slash air traffic into Las Vegas over August and September as low-cost carriers canceled their cheaper overnight flights. In a Wednesday report from CreditSights, the research firm said traffic at Las Vegas McCarran Airport fell 13% in September as the small carriers cut 31% of their flights. “Many of these were overnight aircraft repositioning flights, but yields proved too marginal to continue hauling night-owl gamblers,” the firm said in research note. In August, traffic to Las Vegas, an internationally renowned gambling resort, was off by 8%.
