Rep. Waxman new head of House Energy and Commerce Committee
WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — Rep. Henry Waxman of California has been elected the new chairman of the powerful House Energy and Commerce Committee, replacing veteran lawmaker and Detroit-ally Rep. John Dingell. The 137 to 122 vote by Democratic lawmakers on Thursday marks a significant shift in congressional leadership, and opens the door to stronger environmental standards for the auto industry. Dingell, a staunch supporter of the U.S. auto industry, has successfully blocked tighter regulations for carbon emmission standards.
