Rolls Royce cutting up to 2,000 jobs in 2009

LONDON (MarketWatch) — U.K. aerospace group Rolls Royce said Thursday that it will cut between 1,500 and 2,000 jobs in 2009 due to the economic slowdown and delays to individual programs such as the Airbus A380 and Boeing’s 787 aircraft. Rolls Royce said it is too early to be certain about where the jobs will be lost, but added it is consulting with employee representatives about a proposed reduction of 140 jobs at its assembly and test facility in Derby, U.K. The group currently employs around 39,000 people, with 60% of those based in the U.K. The group said the cuts will have no effect on its 2008 financial guidance and for 2009 the costs are expected to be balanced by savings achieved through the year.
